Built Around Your Trade

Campaigns shaped around your services, working areas, busy seasons and how your customers actually search.

Focused on Real Enquiries

Success is measured through calls, forms and quote requests, not just traffic and rankings.

Reporting You Can Follow

See exactly which services, pages and locations are bringing in genuine, trackable enquiries.

No Off-the-Shelf Packages

Every campaign is built around your market, competition, capacity and commercial priorities.

Why Trade Businesses Lose Work Online

You can be experienced, insured, well reviewed and very good at your job, yet still lose the enquiry because another business appeared above you.

There are usually several reasons.

01

Your Website Is Too General

If one page lists everything you do, Google may struggle to work out which service that page should appear for. Customers also have to hunt for the information they need.

02

You Are Weak Locally

Your website may mention the right services but give Google little evidence about where you work. Your Google Business Profile may also have missing services, incorrect categories or incomplete information.

03

Competitors Show More Proof

Reviews, completed jobs, company information, photographs, qualifications and clear guarantees all help a potential customer decide who they trust enough to contact.

Other problems can sit behind the scenes. Slow pages, broken links, old website content and pages Google cannot read correctly can all restrict how easily your business is found.

3 Ways We Structure a Campaign

SEO Strategies Sized to Your Business

A sole trader covering one town needs a very different approach from a contractor working across several counties. The scope, investment and reporting should reflect how your business actually operates.

Sole Traders

For Independent Tradespeople

For independent tradespeople who need a steady stream of local work. We focus on strengthening your Google Business Profile, targeting a realistic working radius, and making it simple for someone searching on their phone to call or request a quote.

SEO for Sole Traders →
Growing

For Growing Trade Companies

For businesses with a team, multiple vehicles or plans to expand into new areas. We separate your most profitable services and track which pages and locations bring in enquiries your team can actually take on.

For Multi-Branch Contractors

For larger companies operating across several branches or regions. The focus shifts to multi-location site structure and reporting that connects enquiries with sales opportunities.

How Customers Actually Search

Most people don't search using the name of a trade or a formal service term. They search using the problem in front of them, before they've worked out what the solution is called.

"boiler pressure keeps dropping"
Heating Engineer — Boiler Repairs
"lights won't stop flickering"
Electrician — Fault Finding
"damp patch on ceiling after rain"
Roofer — Leak Repairs
"key keeps sticking in the front door"
Locksmith — Lock Repairs

A page built only around a service name misses this stage of the search. We connect the problem someone types into Google with the right service, the property types it usually affects, and a clear way to get in touch, so your site shows up whether a customer searches by symptom or by trade.

How We Prioritise Search Demand

A keyword with a high search volume isn't automatically worth chasing. It might be too broad, attract people outside your working area, or come from someone looking for DIY advice rather than a quote. We weigh search demand against how likely it is to turn into paid work.

What Raw Search Volume Shows

  • How often a phrase is typed into Google
  • Nothing about the person's location
  • Nothing about whether they want to hire someone
  • Nothing about whether it's a service you offer

What We Weigh It Against

  • Typical job value for that service
  • Your team's current capacity
  • Local competition and realistic travel time
  • How likely the search is to convert into an enquiry
1

Service Targeting

We identify the services that make commercial sense before expanding the site, rather than publishing a page for every phrase a keyword tool returns.

2

Geographic Coverage

We target areas you can genuinely serve at a profit, not an arbitrary radius drawn around your business address.

3

Proof That Backs It Up

Reviews, qualifications, guarantees and completed work are built into the page itself, supporting the claim rather than sitting as decoration.

4

Reporting on Enquiries

We track whether improved visibility is producing calls, forms and booked jobs, not just movement in rankings or traffic.

Meet the Founder

The Person Behind Your Campaign

I'm Alicia McColl, co-founder of Landmark Web Design. I help trades and local service businesses generate more calls, quote requests and enquiries through technical SEO, local search and websites built around how customers actually search.

I have spent the last seven years managing technical SEO and local visibility campaigns for regional businesses. I focus on site structure, indexation, keyword targeting, local rankings and lead generation.

Before moving into SEO and web development, I worked in technical project management and PMO roles for organisations including the European Medicines Agency, Alliance Healthcare and BP. That background still shapes how I run SEO projects today, with clear planning, measurable targets and transparent reporting.

My approach is based on generating enquiries rather than chasing rankings for the sake of a report. I build campaigns around the services you want to sell, the areas you want to work in and the searches most likely to turn into booked jobs.

A major part of that is helping independent trades reduce their reliance on paid directories and lead-generation platforms. Your website should generate enquiries that belong to your business, rather than forcing you to compete for leads that have been sold to several contractors at once.

How We Build a Campaign

Every campaign follows the same five stages, in the same order. Nothing gets built or written until we understand the business behind it.

1

Discovery

We start with the business, not a keyword tool. This covers the services you want more of, the areas you cover, typical job value, team capacity, seasonal patterns, qualifications and where your enquiries currently come from.

2

Audit

We review your website, Google Business Profile, current rankings, technical condition, reviews, citations, competitors and any existing tracking, so we know exactly where visibility is being lost.

3

Architecture

We map the site structure around your trade, its distinct services, customer problems, working areas and trust signals, so commercial pages stay easy for both customers and search engines to find.

4

Implementation

Service pages, genuine location pages, technical fixes, internal linking, Google Business Profile work and stronger enquiry actions are rolled out in order of commercial priority, not as a disconnected monthly checklist.

5

Measurement

We track visibility, calls, forms and lead quality, then expand the site further only where it strengthens the existing structure or supports a genuine business opportunity.

Direct Enquiries Instead of Shared Leads

Checkatrade, Bark, MyBuilder, Rated People and other lead platforms can produce work. The problem is that your business does not control the platform, and some enquiry models put several companies in front of the same customer.

Your own website works differently. Someone finds your business, reads about your work and contacts you directly.

Lead Source Who Owns the Relationship? How You Pay Where It Can Fit
Your website through organic search Your business SEO and website investment Building a source of direct enquiries over time
Google Business Profile Your business through Google's platform No fee for the profile Local calls and searches
Trade directories The platform controls the listing Membership, credits or lead fees depending on platform Generating extra enquiries or filling gaps
Google Ads Your business receives the enquiry You pay for advertising Demand that needs to be generated quickly
Referrals Your business Usually relationship based Strong trust and repeat local work

We do not tell you to stop using a channel that already makes money. The better question is whether your own website can generate a larger share of your enquiries so you have more control over where future work comes from.

The Riven Oak website after SEO structure improvements

Case Study

What Happened for The Riven Oak?

The Riven Oak is a specialist carpentry business that came to Landmark with very little organic search visibility and a reliance on shared enquiries through Bark.

We rebuilt the website, separated its main services, improved how project photography loaded and worked on its Google Business Profile and ongoing search visibility.

No enquiries from organic search 35 direct enquiries per month
No meaningful local visibility Top three Google Maps presence across core areas
Shared Bark enquiries Direct enquiries through its own website and Google presence
Price-led enquiries Average enquiry value of £3,000
£2,000+ per month spent on shared leads Fixed investment into its own website and search presence

"We couldn't be happier with the service and end product of Landmark's work, they transformed our website which was performing very poorly and we are seeing a rise in engagement and new projects due to the SEO work."

Frequently Asked Questions

What is SEO for trades?
SEO for trades helps a trade business appear when potential customers search online for the work it provides. It covers your website, Google Business Profile, local visibility, service pages, website content, reviews, business information and technical problems that may stop search engines reading the site properly.
Can SEO get my trade business more enquiries?
SEO can generate more enquiries when your business gains visibility for searches made by people who genuinely need your services. We track calls and enquiry forms so increased rankings and traffic can be assessed against potential work rather than treated as the result on their own.
Can you help me appear on Google Maps?
Yes, we can work on the factors within your control, including your Google Business Profile, categories, services, business information, reviews and website. Google decides the final local results and states that relevance, distance and prominence are major factors.
Can you guarantee that I will rank number one?
No, nobody can guarantee a number one organic or Google Maps position. Google itself states that there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking, and results vary according to the search, customer location and competing businesses.
Do I need a page for every service?
No, a separate page makes sense where the service represents a distinct customer need and enough useful information exists to support it. Creating several pages that say almost the same thing can leave them competing against one another.
Do I need a page for every town I work in?
No, town and location pages should contain useful information that genuinely relates to serving that area. Copying the same text and changing the town name gives customers very little reason to use the page.
Can SEO replace Bark, Checkatrade or MyBuilder?
SEO can reduce your dependence on shared lead platforms if your own website begins producing enough suitable enquiries. We would not suggest removing a profitable lead source before another channel is capable of replacing the work it produces.
Does my Google Business Profile matter?
Yes, your Google Business Profile can be one of the main ways local customers find and contact a trade business. Google says complete and accurate business information helps it understand a company and match it with relevant searches.
Can you work with my current website?
Yes, we can work with an existing website if it provides a sound base for the work required. If technical problems or the current structure make that impractical, we will explain what needs changing before recommending a website redesign or rebuild.
How do you know whether the work is paying off?
We look beyond rankings and website visits by tracking enquiries such as calls and forms. Where your business records quote values and booked jobs, those figures can provide an even clearer view of which services and pages are producing worthwhile work.
Is SEO suitable if I need jobs immediately?
SEO is generally better suited to building a longer-term source of enquiries than filling an empty diary immediately. If you need work straight away, paid advertising or an existing lead platform may need to carry more of the load while organic visibility develops.
Do you only work with trades in Surrey?
No, Landmark Web Design is based in Farnham, Surrey, but works with trade businesses across England. Most SEO work can be completed remotely, so your location does not need to be close to our studio.
