Built for Carpenters, Not Copied From Another Trade

Targeted SEO for Carpenters and Joiners

A generic marketing agency often fails a craftsman because standard agencies do not understand how clients search for custom woodwork. Whether you fit kitchens, build bespoke cabinets, restore staircases, install decking or hang doors, your campaign needs to be built around the exact way homeowners and commercial clients look for that specific work. A one-size-fits-all trades template cannot do that.

We combine a technical check of your website with the on-page changes and local signals that help search engines understand every service you offer. People searching for the work you do can then actually find you and get in touch.

Showing Up Locally

We set up location-specific pages, and we claim and complete your Google Business Profile. We also keep your business name, address and phone number consistent everywhere online, so you surface when a nearby customer searches for a carpenter.

Targeting the Right Searches

We aim for the searches that lead to a real quote request, such as "bespoke kitchen fitter" or "staircase renovation". Broad terms bring in browsers instead of buyers.

A Website Search Engines Can Read

Every page gets clear titles, descriptions and structured information behind the scenes, so search engines can understand exactly what you do and show the right page for the right search.

Genuine Trust Signals

We build links from trade suppliers, local press and relevant platforms such as Houzz, rather than chasing volume, to support your credibility with search engines over time.

Why It Matters

Why Your Carpentry Business Needs Specialist Local SEO

Modern property owners do not consult physical trade directories. When someone needs a reliable, insured carpenter to remodel a kitchen, craft custom moulding or build fitted wardrobes, they search on Google. If your website loads slowly or is hard for search engines to read, it gets pushed down the results in favour of a competitor's.

Dominating the Local Pack

When someone searches for a local woodworker, Google shows the map pack, the top three local results, above the standard listings. Getting your Google Business Profile categories, photos and reviews right is what earns you a place in those top three positions. It is the same principle behind our dedicated local SEO service, and it follows Google's own guidance on how local results work.

Moving Beyond Word of Mouth

Referrals stay valuable, but relying on them alone means quiet weeks during the off season. A well-ranked website works around the clock, showing your finished work to new customers even when nobody has personally recommended you.

We stick to white-hat SEO throughout, meaning no keyword stuffing, no purchased links and no duplicate content. Shortcuts like these can trigger a Google penalty and undo months of work.

We build authority the slow, steady way instead, and it holds up through algorithm changes.

Spotting the Problem Early

Signs Your Carpentry Website Needs an SEO Audit

Catching these early can prevent months of lost project income.

Stuck Past Page One

Most people never click past the first page of Google. Sitting on page two or three leaves your business effectively invisible to potential clients.

Competitors Own the Local Pack

If nearby carpenters keep appearing in the map pack while your business stays hidden below the fold, that's a direct sign of a local SEO gap.

Traffic Drops After a Google Update

A sudden drop in visits often points to thin content, missing structured data, or technical issues that a Google update has newly penalised.

Service Pages Read Like a Pamphlet

Listing every service on one thin page, rather than dedicated pages for framing, flooring, staircases or fitted cabinets, limits how well any of them can rank.

Slow Loading and High Bounce Rates

Visitors leave quickly if mobile pages load slowly or the quote form isn't easy to find.

How We Work

Our Step-by-Step Approach

A structured process turns your website into a working part of your business, not a one-off project that sits still.

1

Full Website Check

We go through the site to find anything stopping Google from reading it properly: broken links, missing pages, or pages accidentally hidden from search.

2

Matching Pages to Real Searches

We look at how people actually search for carpentry work, from "bespoke joinery workshop" to "custom built-in wardrobes estimate". We then make sure your pages match those searches.

3

Rewriting and Structuring Each Page

We rewrite page titles, descriptions and headings, and we add clear labels behind the scenes for each service. Pages are then linked together sensibly, so search engines understand what each page is actually about.

4

Speed and Mobile Fixes

A fast, mobile-friendly site is a genuine ranking factor. We compress large project photos and fix anything slowing the site down on a phone.

5

Google Business Profile and Local Listings

We fully complete your profile, choose the right categories, and keep your name, address and phone number consistent across trade directories. If yours isn't set up yet, we start by claiming and completing your Google Business Profile.

6

Building Genuine Local Authority

We secure links from real suppliers, trade publications and regional news sites, the kind of links that hold their value over time.

7

Monthly Reporting

Using professional-grade tracking software, we monitor rankings, visits and enquiries every month. You get a plain-spoken report showing how that translates into real job estimates, not just numbers on a screen.

Who Does The Work

Who Does the Work, and Where

Landmark Web Design is run by Alicia McColl, who has built and ranked websites for UK trades businesses since 2018. Every site is built, written and reported on from our studio in Farnham, Surrey. There is no account manager layer and no offshore team. You deal with Alicia directly.

We work with carpenters and joiners across Surrey, Hampshire and West Sussex, including Farnham, Guildford, Godalming, Woking, Haslemere, Aldershot, Alton and Camberley, and remotely with workshops anywhere in the UK. Within roughly an hour's drive of Farnham, we can visit your workshop to photograph work and discuss the site in person. Beyond that, everything happens by phone, email and video call, which is how most clients prefer it anyway.

Case Study

The Riven Oak

The Riven Oak came to us with a recently rebuilt site that still worked as a brochure. Every service sat on one page, so Google had no way to tell which search that page should answer, and the business was buying shared leads on Bark alongside it.

We rebuilt the site on a lightweight WordPress build, split the single services page into individual service pages, and rewrote each one. We added custom media handling so project images load quickly without losing detail, and set up the Google Business Profile properly. Monthly SEO has continued since, and the current conversion rate on these leads is 30 per cent.

"We couldn't be happier with the service and end product of Alicia's work, she transformed our website which was performing very poorly and now is seeing a rise in engagement and new projects. We highly recommend Alicia and look forward to continuing to work with her in the near future."

Example Searches We Target

The Kind of Searches Your Pages Should Answer

This is a taste of how we map real customer searches to specific pages on your site, rather than trying to rank one page for everything.

Honesty First

What Can Go Wrong

Every agency page tells you what will work. These are things we have actually seen fail.

Proximity limits the map pack

Google shows map results partly based on how close your registered address is to the searcher. A Farnham workshop will struggle to appear in the map pack for a search made in central Guildford, however good the site is. Organic results are winnable there. Map results often are not.

Service area businesses rank more slowly

If you hide your address because you work from home or a unit, Google treats you as a service area business. Those businesses tend to rank behind ones with a visible, verified address.

Google Business Profile suspensions

Editing your category, address or business name on an established profile can trigger a suspension. Reinstatement takes weeks, so we make those changes carefully and one at a time.

Rankings arriving before capacity

More than one client has had to ask us to slow down because they were quoting eight weeks out and losing goodwill. Tell us your capacity before we start.

Seasonality

Garden room, outbuilding and decking searches peak between March and July and fall away sharply in winter. Interior joinery holds up better. A campaign judged on December numbers alone will look worse than it is.

Previous agency damage

If a previous agency built spam links, cleaning that up comes before anything else and can delay results by a month or two.

Real Experience, Not Theory

What We Have Learned Building Carpentry and Joinery Websites

01

Gallery pages are usually the slowest

Project photos go up straight from the camera. On The Riven Oak's site, resizing and compressing the project images took mobile load time from 4 seconds to under 1.

02

The Google Business Profile category is wrong more often than not

"Contractor", "Construction company" and "Furniture maker" all appear where "Carpenter" or "Joiner" should be. Changing it is frequently the single fastest win available.

03

One page listing everything competes with itself

Splitting The Riven Oak's single services page into individual service pages was the change that moved their rankings. The site didn't rank on page one for any important keyword before the redesign. It now ranks in the top three for keyword plus location searches, and ranks top for AI searches too.

04

People read the portfolio before the copy

Pages with fewer than five varied project photos convert noticeably worse.

05

Budget-bracket enquiry forms change the mix

Asking for a budget bracket on the enquiry form reduces total enquiries but raises the average value. Whether that's worth it depends on your current capacity.

A Common Question

Do Carpenters Need to Publish Blog Articles?

Carpenters have less use for a blog than almost any trade, because the thing that sells joinery is a photograph.

An article on the ten types of timber joint pulls in DIY readers from across the country who will never commission a wardrobe.

What carpentry has instead of a blog is a portfolio, and it does the same job better. Write up a completed project properly, naming the town and the timber, and describing the brief and what the piece cost to make. Add photographs of the work in progress, and the page will rank and convert and keep doing both for years.

A small number of articles do earn their place, the ones answering a question that stands between someone and a decision. A homeowner in a conservation area does not know whether they are allowed to replace rotten timber windows at all, and until they find out they cannot commission anybody to do the work. Someone planning a staircase does not know that Building Regulations Part K sets the rise and going, or that it limits what will fit the space they have. Both questions get asked weeks before a joiner is called, which is what makes them worth answering.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions: SEO for Carpenters and Joiners

How long does SEO take for a carpentry business?
Most carpentry and joinery businesses see movement in Google Business Profile and local pack visibility within 60 to 90 days, with competitive organic terms usually taking 4 to 6 months. Carpentry also has a longer sales cycle than most trades. Somebody researching a fitted wardrobe or a staircase in January may not book until March, so the enquiry and the job land in different months. That gap is worth remembering when you judge whether the work is paying, because early enquiries often convert well after the report that recorded them.
Is SEO worth it if most of my work comes from referrals?
Yes, and referrals are usually the reason it works faster than expected. Somebody who has been given your name still searches for it, reads the reviews and looks at photographs of finished work before calling. If nothing comes up, or the site looks abandoned, the referral cools. Search visibility also reaches the customers your existing clients cannot introduce you to, which matters when the referrals dry up for a quarter and the diary needs filling with work you did not have to wait for.
Do photographs of finished work really affect rankings?
Yes, more than in almost any other trade, though indirectly rather than as a ranking factor. Nobody commissions bespoke joinery without seeing the standard of the work first, so pages carrying real photographs hold attention longer and produce more enquiries, and those signals feed back into how the page performs. Photographs also give every project page and location page something genuine to say. Shot on a phone, in daylight, before you clear the site, and named for what they show rather than IMG_0421.
Should I target bespoke searches or specific product searches?
Specific product searches, in almost every case. Bespoke joinery and custom carpentry are terms the trade uses about itself, and they carry far less search volume than fitted wardrobes, alcove units, staircase renovation, oak framing, garden rooms or media walls. Customers search for the thing they want built. Build a page for each type of work you genuinely take on, use the word bespoke inside those pages where it fits naturally, and let the product term do the work of getting found.
Can a workshop-based joiner win work outside their own town?
Yes, and more easily than most trades can. A homeowner will not call a plumber twenty miles away for a leak, but they will travel or wait for a maker whose work they like, particularly for furniture, staircases and larger fitted pieces. That means the map results matter less for your commissioned work than for an emergency trade, and the project pages matter more. Local searches still carry the fitting and second fix work, so both are worth building, with the balance set by how much of the diary is workshop work.

If You've Been Let Down Before

Working With Us After a Bad Experience

Several of our carpentry clients arrived after paying an agency that promised rankings within weeks and delivered directory listings and thin blog posts instead.

What we do differently is specific rather than philosophical.

No minimum term. Contracts run month to month.

You own everything. The domain, the hosting, the website files and the Google Business Profile.

Real numbers, not impressions. Call tracking shows you the actual phone calls and forms.

No account manager layer. You speak to the person doing the work.
